Next week marks 20 years since the murder of Anna Politkovskaya

Anna Politkovskaya was a journalist for Novaya Gazeta, a writer and human rights defender who became internationally known for her reporting on the war in Chechnya, human rights violations, corruption, and abuses committed by the Russian authorities and security forces.

On 7 October 2006, Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in the entrance hall of her apartment building in Moscow. Those who carried out and organized the murder were convicted, but those who ordered the killing have never been identified.

Her murder became one of the most widely recognized symbols of how dangerous the work of an independent journalist and human rights defender can be in Russia.

On 1 October at 17:00, we invite you to the Amnesty International office in Helsinki for an evening workshop, From Memory to Action.

We will discuss Anna Politkovskaya’s work and legacy, reflect on current human rights issues, and together prepare signs and messages for the demonstration that will take place on 7 October — exactly 20 years after her murder.
