Discussion with Russian-speaking Writers

Updated: May 26

On June 2 at 18:00, a discussion featuring Russian-speaking writers will take place in Helsinki.

During the event, we will discuss the state of contemporary Russian literature, modern authors, and freedom of speech. We will talk about what it means to write outside one’s homeland and how the war affects literature. We will also address issues related to supporting writers abroad, opportunities for grants, and how willing European institutions are today to collaborate with authors with Russian names, which publishers continue to release Russian-language books, and in what print runs.

The speakers will include:

Olga Marmotta — an artist and writer whose book Journey in Search of the Sun was recently published.

Mikhail Durnenkov — a playwright and screenwriter whose play Diva was staged in Finland.

Leonid Kaganov — a science fiction writer and poet who recently published the short story collection My Cosmonautics and Other Stories.

The discussion will be held in Russian, and an online livestream will also be available:

📍 The event will take place at the Merkki Museum of the Press, Ludviginkatu 2–4:

We look forward to seeing you to discuss the challenges facing contemporary Russian literature and to give you an opportunity to ask questions to prominent cultural figures.
