Yesterday, on April 23rd, the first event in the discussion series “How has the Russian language changed in the 2020s?” took place in Helsinki

The topic of the meeting was “Relocation: the language of migration.”

Participants shared their emigration stories and discussed Russian words that they began using after moving to Finland.

The most popular new word that entered everyday use turned out to be “case.” It is often used, for example, in the phrase “to build a case for Migri”, which means preparing one’s personal file and explaining the threats a person might face in Russia, so that the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) will consider the arguments and grant protection.
