Yesterday in Helsinki, we held a meeting titled "Blocking: The Language of the Internet" as part of the project "How Has the Russian Language Changed in the 2020s?"

Together with Russian-speaking journalists, we discussed state and opposition media, censorship, disinformation, social media, and artificial intelligence. The speakers drew parallels between modern censorship and censorship in the USSR, talked about new words journalists use to circumvent repressive laws, and addressed how AI assists in their work as well as the risks associated with its use.

Participants also took the opportunity to criticize the Finnish state media outlet Yle Novosti, which publishes content in Russian but often uses an overly awkward style of presentation. At the same time, they expressed respect for the work of its journalists.
