On 3 December at 18:00, we invite you to a meeting dedicated to the Russian language with one of Finland’s most renowned Russian linguists — Professor Arto Mustajoki.
The event will be held in Finnish. Professor Mustajoki will talk about how the Russian language is changing in the 2020s.The main theme of the evening is “novoyaz” — the new political language of Russia — and how it is used in contemporary political rhetoric, as well as the newest borrowings and semantic shifts in modern Russian.
He will also discuss the subtle difference between the prepositions “в” and “на” in the expression “in/on Ukraine”.
This event concludes the discussion series “How Has the Russian Language Changed in the 2020s?”, aimed at deepening the understanding of recent linguistic transformations among specialists on Russia living in Finland.
The series is organised by Suomi–Venäjä-seura in cooperation with Initiative FoReDi ry, with the support of the Juhlarahasto Foundation.
During the meeting, we will also present a Russian–Finnish dictionary of new words and expressions that have appeared, changed meaning, or been revived in the Russian language of the 2020s.
The discussion will be moderated by Riku Savonen, Director of the Suomi–Venäjä-seura.
If you are studying Finnish or interested in how the Russian language evolves, this meeting will be both useful and fascinating for you! Free entry!
