Lecture "The Arctic: Environmental Challenges and Lessons in Volunteering"

Writer: Initiative FoReDiInitiative FoReDi

February 19 at 6:00 PM, one of our co-founders, Nikita Kirillov, will give a lecture about his expeditions to the Russian Arctic and the environmental challenges in this region.

For five years, before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Nikita was involved in organizing environmental expeditions to the Arctic. During this time, his team managed to collect hazardous waste left over from the Soviet era: more than 500 tons of scrap metal and other debris, over 4,000 rusty barrels of fuel and lubricants, and they also dismantled six kilometers of fuel pipelines. Nikita also photographed and filmed lighthouses and decaying architecture in Karelia and the Arctic, seeking ways to preserve and restore them.

At the lecture, Nikita will talk about:

  • the history of Arctic pollution;

  • the challenging yet important work of volunteers;

  • issues related to poaching;

  • methods for preserving the unique nature of the Arctic region;

  • how to support polar bears.

📍 We are waiting for you in Helsinki at the library on Rikhardinkatu 3 (Lukusali Hall, 3rd floor).

The lecture will be informal, in a storytelling format, without complex scientific data. It will be delivered in Russian with translation into Finnish.

The event is organized by the Russian-Finnish society "Friendship."
