On January 9 at 6:00 PM, we will gather to watch and discuss the documentary film “The Color of the Nation” about Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, a pioneer of color photography who, 120 years ago, undertook the crucial task of capturing the cultural and geographical diversity of the Russian Empire on the eve of the turbulent 20th century.
In the film, we will see the wonder of pre-revolutionary Russia in color, along with comparative footage showing what once was and what it has become. We will learn about early color photography techniques and hear the stories of those who preserved and published this remarkable heritage.
After the screening, we will focus on photographs of Finland, Karelia, and other familiar places. We will try to compare historical images with their present-day appearance using Street View and other public sources.
The film will be screened in Russian with English subtitles.
Feel free to bring drinks and snacks if you wish. We will provide a large screen and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Dishes, a kettle, a coffee maker, and a microwave will be available if needed.
